What temperature should I print PLA at?

The eSUN PLA+ we stock prints at 190-230 °C on the nozzle and 45-60 °C on the bed, with the cooling fan at 100% and speeds up to 200 mm/s. Start in the middle of those ranges, around 210 °C and 55 °C, and adjust from there: raise the nozzle if layers separate, lower it if you get stringing or blobs.

What temperature should I print PETG at?

PETG wants 240-260 °C on the nozzle and 75-90 °C on the bed, noticeably hotter than PLA, and a lower top speed of about 150 mm/s. Keep the fan on, and give the first layer a little extra distance from the bed, because PETG sticks hard enough to damage a build plate if it is squashed too close.

PLA or PETG: which should I use?

Use PLA for prototypes, display pieces, miniatures and anything that will live indoors at room temperature. Use PETG for parts that get used rather than looked at: it takes impact instead of shattering, tolerates heat and sunlight far better, and shrugs off water and most chemicals. PETG costs you a hotter nozzle, a hotter bed and the need to keep the spool dry.

Will a PLA print survive a summer in a car in Tbilisi?

No. PLA starts to soften around 55-60 °C, and a car parked in the sun in a Tbilisi July goes well past that on the dashboard. Phone mounts, sunglass holders and anything else that lives in a car should be printed in PETG at minimum, or in ABS or a high-temperature nylon if it also has to carry load.

Do I need an enclosed 3D printer?

Not for PLA or PETG, which both print happily on an open machine. You do need an enclosure for ABS and for glass- or carbon-filled nylons: they shrink as they cool, and a draught from an open window is enough to make corners lift or layers split. Products that require one are marked 'Needs Enclosure' in their specifications.

Why do the corners of my print lift off the bed?

That is warping, and it is almost always the first layer or the air around the printer. Clean the plate with isopropyl alcohol so it is free of grease, check the bed temperature is right for the material (45-60 °C for PLA, 75-90 °C for PETG), slow the first layer down, and add a brim to give the corners more to hold on to. If you are printing ABS, close the windows and use an enclosure.

Does 3D printing filament need drying?

PETG, nylon and fibre-filled composites all pull moisture out of the air, and a wet spool prints badly: popping and hissing from the nozzle, a rough bubbled surface, heavy stringing and weak layer bonding. PETG dries at 60 °C for about four hours. Nylons need longer and hotter, so check the figure printed on the spool. We stock filament dryers, including the eBox Lite and the Sovol SH01 and SH02.

How should I store filament in Tbilisi's humidity?

Keep opened spools in a sealed box or vacuum bag with fresh desiccant, not on an open shelf. Tbilisi summers are humid enough that PETG and nylon will noticeably degrade within weeks in the open air, while PLA is more forgiving. If a spool has already gone damp, dry it before printing rather than throwing it away.

What do I need to print glass-fibre nylon like PAHT-GF?

A hotend that runs well above 270 °C, an enclosure, a hardened nozzle, and a thoroughly dried spool. High-temperature nylons are moisture-sensitive enough that a day in the open air will ruin a print, so dry before use and store sealed. Our QIDI PAHT-GF holds its shape to a heat distortion temperature of 190 °C, which is why it is used for gears and industrial parts rather than for display prints.

How much does a 1 kg spool of filament print?

A 1 kg spool of 1.75 mm PLA holds roughly 330 metres of filament. In practice that is somewhere between 60 and 80 small models the size of a 3DBenchy, or a handful of large functional parts. Fibre-filled and high-temperature materials are denser, so the same weight gives you less length.

Is PLA food safe?

Treat a 3D print as not food safe unless it was made for that purpose. Raw PLA is generally considered food contact safe, but the print is not the same as the pellet: the layer lines hold bacteria that washing does not reach, the filament may carry colourants, and the hot end and nozzle are not food-grade. For anything that touches food, use a food-safe liner or a smooth-walled container rather than a bare print.

Can 3D printed parts be used outdoors?

PLA is the wrong choice: sunlight makes it brittle within a season and it deforms on a hot day. ASA is the material made for the job, since it keeps its strength and colour under UV and weather, and we stock eASA+ for exactly this. PETG is the next best option and easier to print, though its colours will fade with prolonged sun. Filaments with tested UV resistance are marked as such in their specifications.
